Material Mixtape
October 14, 2022–October 23, 2022
New Collectors is excited to announce Material Mixtape, a group show featuring works by 12 MFA candidates at the School of Visual Arts. The participating students, taught by the artist James O. Clark, will be presenting a diverse range of mediums from paintings and drawings to installations throughout the gallery. The exhibition will open with a reception on Friday, October 14, from 6pm to 8pm, and will be on view at 191 Henry Street through Sunday, October 23, 2022.
The exhibition is a snapshot of the artists’ practice as it stands now. They will continue to experiment with the support of mentors, professors, and their peers, and in the coming year, the artists will graduate with an MFA and enter the world as emerging artists.
Mixtapes bring together a range of artists and sounds. Similarly, in Material Mixtape, the artists are sharing a piece of their individual practice, ranging widely from the source of their inspiration to the literal materials they are using in their studio.
Some artists examine emotion, trauma, and the body, as it relates to their personal experiences. Some delve into the materiality of the work, from hyper-slick acrylic to textured and layered gesso. Others are creating work that can only be contextualized in the gallery. Despite these variations, the work is an intimate group portrait of these promising artists.
Artists include Yuli Aloni Primor, Taylor S. Bernstein, Jingyao Huang, Rosie K. Kim, Nianxin Li, Silvia Muleo, Pei Ou, Tom Hecht, Camila Varon, Lu Xia, Sora Xu, and Kaiqing Yu.
